In a case of haemorrhoids, apart from the local symptoms and the modalities, the totality of the symptoms should be taken into account as well. Below you can find some characteristics of remedies regarding haemorrhoids.
ALOE
Congested hemorrhoids protruding like a bunch of grapes.
Aloe has abdominal plethora and flatulence like Nux-v and Sulphur, and haemorrhoids like Nux-v, Sulphur and Aesculus but it differs from these remedies in that it acts almost entirely on the rectum, producing inflammation of the mucus of the rectum.
Patients have the sensation as if their rectum is filled with little sticks. The stools are accompanied by much flatus. The haemorrhoids protrude like a bunch of grapes and are greatly relieved by cold water.
Headache situated over the eyes with a sensation as though a weight were pressing the eyelids down. Relief comes from partially closing the eyelids.
AMEL: pain better from kneeling.
Remedies that have an almost specific effect on the rectum and anus:
Aesculus, Collinsonia and Hamamelis:
AESCULUS
Has venous congestion. Throbbing deep in the abdomen, particularly in the hypogastric region. The haemorrhoids, which may or may not bleed, are accompanied by a feeling of dryness in the rectum, as though little sticks or splinters were pricking the folds of the mucous membrane. Also has weak feeling at the sacro-iliac symphysis, as though the legs were about to give out. Suffers from a combination of back pain (lumbago) and haemorrhoids.
Aesculus and Kali-c are similar when the sacral region and the sciatic nerves are affected. The pain extends from the sacral region to the sciatic nerve and the aggravation is at 2- 4am. The differentiating point is that in Aesculus the sciatica will be typically accompanied by haemorrhoids. Dr Burt, commented, ‘Not one of our remedies produced so many and so strongly marked symptoms of haemorrhoids as the Aesculus.’ Clarke says that Aesculus patients as a rule are despondent and irritable, very much worse for walking: Kent defines this aggravation from walking as a pain through the sacrum into the hips. Allen says the Aesculus patient is miserably cross – the rectum feels as if full of small sticks, and after defaecation there is intense pain in the anus for hours.
COLLINSONIA
Is indicated in haemorrhoids when there is a sensation as of sticks (Aesc.) in the rectum. Constipation is usual. The bowels are more apt to move in the evening. Collinsonia is also useful in prolapsus uteri complicated with haemorrhoids. It is just as frequently indicated in this condition as is Podophyllum in prolapsus uteri with diarrhoea.
HAMAMELIS
Is called for in haemorrhoids associated with varices, when there is considerable haemorrhage with marked soreness of the affected parts. The back feels as if it would break (Calc). Laxness of all veins. Hamamelis patients are sensitive to the open air and rainy weather.
ARSENICUM
Arsenicum has burning pains. Haemorrhoids are better from hot bathing or hot compresses. Haemorrhoids that are caused by diarrhea.
CARDUUS MARIANUS
In cases with severe liver affections like cirrhosis of the liver.
Haemorrhoids with acidity of stomach and distension of bowels. Portal hyperaemia; inflammation of biliary ducts; tardy peristaltic movements in large intestines.
IGNATIA
Ignatia patient suffers from haemorrhoids that prolapse with every stool (Nux-v.) Sharp ‘stitches’ shoot up the rectum. Of course, the characteristic Ignatia temperament must be present.
LACHESIS
Climacteric ailments, haemorrhoids, haemorrhages; hot flushes and hot perspiration; burning vertex headache, especially at or after the menopause (Sang., Sulph.).
NITRIC ACID
Haemorrhoid (ulcerated) and fissure with sharp, splinter-like pains, during and lasting long after stool. Worse touch, cough.
In hypochondriacal individuals with marked fear of cancer.
NUX VOMICA
One of the main remedies for haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids, painful and protruding, or attended with haemorrhage.
Accompanied with constipation with ineffectual urging.
Nux-v is more suited to men than Sepia which is for women.
Irritable individuals who also have stomach problems and problems with their sleep.
PAEONIA
Paeonia is a remedy known to the ancients and included by Dioscorides in his Materia Medica. There is intolerable lasting pain in the rectum, during and after stool, oozing of moisture from the rectum and intense chilliness after stool. Amelioration sitting and spreading apart the legs and the buttocks with their hands. A feature of the Paeonia patient is terrifying dreams and nightmares.
RATANHIA
Haemorrhoids and cracks with the sensation as if there is broken glass in the anus. The pain is better when soaking in a warm bath, lying, walking slowly.
SEPIA
Fissure. Fistula. Haemorrhoids with pelvic weakness. Terrible rectal itching and moisture; perineal excoriation.
SULPHUR
Large, congested, moist haemorrhoids with irresistible itching. Excoriation, moisture and itching rectum, worse from scratching, night, beer, standing. Better cold applications.
