Hairfall or Baldness – cause for worry

One of the biggest worries that can be caused by a seemingly harmless thing is that caused by falling of hair or hair loss as it immediately throws up a stark image of a bald pate, which no one wants to have. The very thought of hair fall tends to lower your confidence about your looks. It may even make you a target of jokes. A commonly heard joke in our part of the world is that if one is losing hair, it is an indication that he is becoming rich. In reality, the opposite is more likely to be true. A person with falling hair ends up losing or spending a fortune trying to stop the hair from falling and preserving one’s crowning glory. Moreover, there is no dearth of enterprising people out to fleece such patients who are already hassled.

Causes of Hair fall or Baldness

To understand the causes of hairfall, it is important to understand the normal process of growth and fall of hair. The hair are constantly undergoing a normal cyclic process of growth and fall at the same time.  There are three phases of the life cycle of a hair. The first phase of growth is known as the anagen phase, which lasts for 2 to 6 years. Roughly 85% of the hair are in the anagen phase or the phase of growth at any given time. The normal growth of a hair is about 10 cm in a year. The second phase is known as the catagen phase or the transitional phase. It lasts for about 1-2 weeks. During this phase, the hair follicle shrinks to about 1/6th of the original length. The last phase is the telogen phase or the resting phase. During this phase, the hair does not grow. This lasts for 5-6 weeks. Keeping in mind the normal phases of the life of a hair, it is perfectly normal for a person to lose about 40-80 strands of hair in a day. In fact, every person loses this number of hair everyday and does not even come to know about it. It is only when the number of hair falling in a day far exceeds this that one should have any cause for concern. The causes of excessive hairfall can vary from person to person as there are various possible reasons for this phenomenon.

  • Deficiency in one’s diet where one does not get adequate levels of the required minerals and vitamins can be one prominent cause. Micronutrients like Zinc, Selenium and Iron are important for the normal growth of hair and any deficiency in these can cause hairfall.
  • The absence of good health or the presence of some or the other illness can also cause the hairfall to increase. This illness may be acute or temporary in nature but can also be of long lasting or chronic.
  • In males, the most common cause is the androgenic baldness or the male pattern baldness. This variety of baldness is present only in males and tends to run in families. It occurs due to the presence of excess of testosterone, which results in increased hair growth all over the body but the hair on the head falls out. In the male pattern baldness, the hair loss happens mainly from the front part of the had and the top of the head with sides and back relatively less affected.
  • Fungal infections of the scalp can also cause baldness in patches. Other localised infections of the scalp can also cause hairfall.
  • Hairfall can occur in females just after pregnancy or after delivery. This has to do with the changes in the hormones that occur during these phases.

Treatment of baldness or hair fall

Before we talk of treatment of hair fall, one needs to understand a few basic things. As mentioned in the previous paragraph about the causes of hair fall, there are different reasons for this problem. The treatment of baldness varies according to the precise reason of the problem. In cases where the baldness is happening due to androgenic reasons, it is almost impossible to cure the problem. Such cases usually run in families. One can only minimize the problem and delay the inevitable. But there is no way you can cure the problem and get back your hair. All so called wonder cures are just efforts to fleece the poor and gullible patients. In other cases, where the problem is because of some fungal infection or due to some systemic issues or poor general health, one can definitely cure the problem and even get the lost hair back.
