You could be suffering from Lumbago!

What have your treatment options been so far? Taking painkillers and resting every time there is an attack. Getting a surgery done and hoping that it solves the pain. Most of our patients with a back pain had been for years before they came to us. They said the pain got better for a few months then would come back again. Apart from resting and physiotherapy, homeopathy helps in both acute and chronic backaches. It reduces pain and discomfort in acute cases and helps to strengthen the muscles and ligaments in the back in chronic cases thereby preventing recurrence of the pain.

Lumbago or backache
Lumbago is one of the most common problems that we treat in our clinic. We get a lot of people who have just been diagnosed with lumbago or who have been taking allopathic medications for lumbago, coming to us asking if we can help them.

How common is lumbago?
Globally, around 60-70% of people suffer from lumbago. Most of us experience backache at least once in our lifetime.

Symptoms of lumbago?
A lot of people come to us with complaints of backache, especially the pain is in the lower back. You have difficulty getting up from the bed, rising from a sitting posture, turning sides in bed or when you sit for a long time and get up, you can’t straighten yourself, you know you are bend and stuck like that for some time.

How does it start? What happens is, a lot of people when they are taking a shower and the soap slips down, they suddenly try to catch the soap or a child is running towards you, with all your affection you bend and lift the child, you catch your back or you are in some vague position, you sneeze and suddenly you catch your back. These are acute catches and these will go away in few days but when it becomes chronic it lasts for a long period of time.

The typical symptoms are pain in the back, difficulty getting up or turning in bed. Sometimes, the pain can radiate down to either one leg or both legs, this is called as sciatica. When the nerve gets compressed the pain goes all the way down to the legs can cause numbness and tingling sensation in the leg. You will have difficulty standing for a long period, when you stand for a little more, you start getting excruciating pain down the legs.

Why it happens:
There can be various reasons for backache. One of the main reasons is posture, you sit for long hours in front of the computer and your back takes the beating and kind of prolapse.

It could be an action that you’re doing wrong, lifting a bucket in the wrong way, sneezing in the wrong position, lifting a child in the wrong position. All this can contribute to backache.

Apart from these, there are some medical reasons which can cause backache like constipation, acidity, gynaecological problems like pelvic disorders, white discharge, painful and irregular periods, fibroids, urinary infections. It is not always just a physical problem.

Allopathic approach:
In allopathy, initially, they treat you with painkillers and as long as you take the painkillers, you feel better. They put you on physiotherapy at the same time, you feel better but once you stop the painkillers your pain is back. If that does not help, they give you a steroid shot but within 2-3 months, your back pain comes back. If that also doesn’t help then they say you have to do a surgical procedure where the disc prolapse is treated. I have had people come back to me after surgeries in four months saying that the pain has come back again and you know surgery to the back is always a risky proposition. It’s a nerve ending, it is a junction box. You do it, God forbid something goes wrong.

Surgery should be your last option.

Homeopathic approach:
We had people coming to us in wheelchairs? We had to go visit patients and treat them because they could not move and we have been able to help them.

We basically see what is causing the backache, we take your case and try to figure out the possible reason for the backache. Apart from reducing the pain and strengthening the back muscles and ligaments and tendons, we also treat the cause that is causing the backache.

It might take a little while for us to help you, but trust me within 2 to 3 months you will feel better and if you continue the medicines for some time we can get rid of your backache permanently.

Take a painkiller if the pain is very bad. I’m not against painkillers. You want to apply move or nice gel, go ahead, I have no issues with it because I am treating the cause, in the interim you do whatever that helps.

We had many people who have come to us, who have posted for surgery. They have decided their date for surgery and we have been able to help them avoid surgeries and they’re all doing well, carrying on the day-to-day activities, and they are absolutely fine.

What happens if you don’t treat lumbago?
If left alone, the backache will keep increasing and you will find it difficult to do things. If this progresses further, it can cause compression of nerves and the pain becomes unbearable leaving you bedridden, you will reach a stage where you have to go in for surgical intervention.

People who are already on allopathic medication:
We make them stop their allopathic medication and we ask them to take Homeopathy for three months. In some cases where the backache is chronic, we start homeopathic medicines along with allopathy, and over some time, we taper off their allopathic medicines. Most people respond in about two to three months.

Diet restrictions
Stomach issues can cause backache. So avoid milk and milk products that might cause gas, bloating, and all that but for backache per se, there are no major dietary restrictions that you need to follow.

Do’s and Don’ts:
There are certain postures which you need to adopt, while you are lifting a bucket, for instance, lift it from the side and not from the front, when you are lifting a child, go down on your knees and then lift the child, when you’re sitting and working for long, take half an hour break, go for a walk come back and then start working again.

Google will give you a lot of information about how to keep your back safe, just follow those instructions.

I don’t recommend wearing a belt except when it is acute and you have to travel. The problem is when you wear a belt it causes a lot of stiffness in the back and as long as your back is stiff, you’re not going to get better.

The moment you get a backache the first advice you get is to take rest. People don’t know how long to take rest. According to WHO, about 1 to 2 weeks of rest is enough, but people take rest for 2 to 3 months. So when you take rest for two to three months. What are you going through in your mind? I am a patient, I’m not moving, your back muscles are stiff and even when you go to the loo, you walk stiffly. A stiff muscle can cause a lot of other pains in and around the back, not just your back, So, it is not a great idea to take long bed rest. One week of rest is enough. The moment the pains are better, get out of bed, try to walk normally, don’t try to walk stiffly, a lot of people even after they recover they walk stiffly. Don’t do that, the moment you are a little better try and be normal, get back to your regular walking style, the ease with which you walk, don’t think you are a patient, don’t protect yourself, it does not work. The faster you think that you’re better the faster you’re going to recover.

Drink a lot of water, hot fermentation, cold fermentation will also help.

Start doing exercises to strengthen your muscles of the back once you are better. You could do yoga, meet a physiotherapist, he can teach you some exercises. Don’t overdo it either.

What would I do if I were in your place?
I would for sure not start pain killers, steroids, or go for surgery. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of backache.

Do not go for surgery or start on any allopathic medications, even painkillers until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months’ time. But if these medicines can help you get rid of pain and avoid surgery for the rest of your life, isn’t it worth giving it a try?

Take care.
