ARTHRITIS:
We get a lot of patients who have just been diagnosed with arthritis or who have been taking allopathic medications for arthritis, coming to us asking if we can help them.

How common is arthritis?
Arthritis affects more than 180 million people in World. It is more common in women than in men.

Symptoms of arthritis?
You have pain, discomfort in the knees when you get up from the chair, climb the stairs, go down the stairs, get out of bed, rise from the toilet seat. You might have swelling and stiffness in the knees. You will feel weakness in the knee as if they might buckle or give way. These are the different complaints people with arthritis have.

Arthritis is not confined to old people, we see a lot of youngsters with arthritis who come to our clinic.

What happens in arthritis:
Arthritis is basically degeneration of the bones, it’s age-related wear and tear of the bones and that’s all that is important right now.

Allopathic approach:
Initially, they treat you with painkillers, if it doesn’t respond, then they’ll put you on physiotherapy, then you are given local steroid injections. And if nothing works, they do knee replacement surgery. What you need to understand is all these painkillers and steroid injections provide only temporary relief. The process of degeneration that is happening cannot be stopped with these medicines. Knee replacement is a different ball game altogether.

Homeopathic approach:
Homeopathy believes that we need to stop the process of arthritis first, which means whatever damage is happening within your knee joint has to be stopped. In the first 2 to 3 months we concentrate more on stopping the process of arthritis and prevent further degeneration. As we do this the pain also gets better. So over some time the swelling, the pain, and your dependability on pain killers will come down. I’m not saying it will go away completely but it will become manageable

We need time, we are not dealing with pain killers here and we are looking at stopping the process which is causing pain. I am not saying we can cure arthritis, but we can control the further damage so that you don’t go to a stage where you can’t function on your own.

We have been able to stop a lot of people from going into surgery. What is it that they want? They just want to manage their life, they are not going to go play sports or do something aggressive, you should be able to do your stuff and we have been able to help a lot of people manage their pain.

People who are already on allopathic medication:
We make them stop their allopathic medication and we ask them to take Homeopathy for three months. In some cases where the arthritis is chronic, we start homeopathic medicines along with allopathy, and over a period of time, we taper off their allopathic medicines. Most people respond in about two to three months, some people take a longer time to respond.

What happens if you don’t treat arthritis?
If left alone, the arthritis process will continue to grow, it will further damage your bones, your pain will keep increasing, you will reach a stage where you will find it difficult to walk. You might be bedridden.

Diet restrictions:
There are no diet restrictions to follow.

Do’s and Don’ts:

Do’s:

If you keep putting on weight, you will put more load on your knee joints, and you will have more pain. So control your diet, there is a diet on www.drkaisrani.com which I highly advise and it has helped a lot of elderly people to lose weight also. You do not lose weight with exercises after a particular age, it doesn’t happen, it is easier said than done.

You go to any doctor, they will tell you if you lose weight, then your knee pains will get better. How will you lose weight, Have any of you lost weight after a particular age? It doesn’t work. With this particular diet, trust me. I’ve lost about 11kgs in a matter of three to four months and a lot of people with me have also lost weight. So check it out, it’s there on the website. Losing weight can help you control the pain to a large extent.

Physiotherapy will help, physiotherapy helps to strengthen the ligaments and muscles around the knee joints.

Sunlight has an important role to play for healthy joints, I highly recommend 15 minutes of sunlight either during sunrise or sunset as it increases the vitamin D.

Hot fermentation, cold fermentation, ayurvedic massages, all this can help you along with the homeopathic medications. You can try everything out.

Don’ts:
Avoid aggressive workouts. Try not to land on your knees, especially for youngsters who play tennis or badminton, when you jump, you land on your knees this can damage it further, you can go for a walk. Do not stop your activities, that’s the worst thing that you can do.

The moment you have arthritis, a lot of doctors say stop walking, stop doing this, take rest, that’s not correct. I don’t agree with that, the moment you do that, you’re going to put on weight and that weight is going to put more load on your knees and that’s going to damage it further. So, don’t stop your activities. If you are somebody who walks regularly, plays tennis, go for a walk, play tennis, just don’t do it aggressively. It’s not just the walk or the sports that are helping you, it is the company that helps you. It is the pleasure that you get out of doing these kinds of things with people that will take your mind off. So don’t stop any activity that you’re passionate about.

What would I do if I were in your place?
I would for sure not start pain killers, steroids, or go for surgery. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and manage arthritis.

Do not go for surgery or start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months’ time. But if these medicines can help you manage your pain and avoid surgery for the rest of your life, isn’t it worth giving it a try?

Take care.
