Cervical spondylosis or Neck pain:
All of us go through neck pain at some point of the time. It could be temporary lasting for a few days or weeks. It could also last for months or years together.

How common is cervical spondylosis?
Around 14% of the population suffers from cervical spondylosis. It is more common in females than in males.

Why does it happen?
Cervical spondylosis is basically degeneration of the neck bones which usually happens because of bad postures. We sit at the desk in front of the computer the whole day without taking a break, we do not know where to place the keyboard, when you keep it far and type, you put pressure on the shoulders and neck. You sit on the sofa, bed, chair and work on laptops. People who bend and make chapati’s or cut vegetables for a long period, painters, teachers who correct papers, and bankers, all these people can get cervical spondylosis.

One of the most common reasons why you get neck pain is stress. Have you heard of the term called-that fellow is a pain in my neck, this problem has become a big pain in my neck? The reason is, suppose you meet somebody you do not like, they come into your room, sit and talk to you, the moment they go out of the room. What is the first thing you do? You stretch because even without your knowledge the muscles in the neck go into spasm. The neck is the place that absorbs maximum stress. When the muscle of the neck spasm, they bring the spine together which puts pressure on the nerves and blood vessels giving rise to pain.

Symptoms of cervical spondylosis:
You could experience pain in the neck, or the pain can radiate to the shoulders, upper arms, or all the way down to the fingertips. If the blood vessel, nerves are getting compressed you might feel numbness and giddiness.

Allopathic approach:
You go to the doctor, he puts you on painkillers and a neck collar. He also asks you to go for physiotherapy. You feel better as long as you are on these medications. Once you stop them, within few weeks, the pain comes back again and he finally asks you to go for surgery.

Homeopathic approach:
We have been able to help a lot of people with cervical spondylosis. We not only treat your neck pain but also take a lot of things into consideration like managing your stress, strengthening the neck muscles. In homeopathy, we take care of your stress that causes neck pain and give you medicines to relax the muscles, nerves, and blood vessels, thus bringing down the pain, discomfort, and giddiness. In fact, some people come only with giddiness and we figure out that it is cervical, we treat it accordingly and they are absolutely fine.

Most people want to shrug and stretch their shoulders, they feel a little lethargic, sleepy, and inactive. All these symptoms come down once you start on the homeopathic medicines. Once the pain comes down, we suggest not stopping the medications immediately because we need to strengthen the neck and that takes a little time. Keep continuing the medication for some time and trust me the pain will completely vanish.

People who are already on allopathic medication:
We make them stop their allopathic medication and ask them to take Homeopathy for three months. In some cases where they have been on allopathic medicines for a long time, we start homeopathic medicines along with allopathy, and over a period of time, we taper off their allopathic medicines.

What happens if you don’t treat cervical spondylosis?
If left alone, you will just continue to have pain, numbness, and discomfort. There is a very old saying by people that if you do not take care of cervical spondylosis, you will get paralysis and all that kind of nonsense. Nothing will happen, the more you worry about it, the more you are going to suffer, you just need to chill and take medicines.

Do’s and Don’ts:
Try not to sit continuously and work, take breaks every half and hourly and stretch, keep your keyboards properly, in the initial stages you can do physiotherapy which will help you strengthen the muscles. You can use a hot pack. In Ayurveda, there are some massages that can help, you can ask them to give you massages that will strengthen your muscles around the neck.

I do not recommend a neck collar because it makes your neck stiffer. Even after removing the collar, a lot of people walk stiffly which makes your muscles stiff, that is not what you want, you want your muscles to be relaxed. Trust me, nothing is going to happen, relax, let your neck move freely. When the neck moves freely, it improves circulation, your energy levels improve and you feel better.

How do you sleep when you have cervical spondylosis?

Previously, they used to say not to use a pillow but you are not going to sleep on your back all night. You invariably turn to the sides and when you turn to the side and sleep without a pillow, you will be dangling your neck or you use your hand for support which causes more numbness in the hands. You need to sleep with a pillow that is thick enough to cover from your shoulder to neck so that your head remains supported. If you use a bigger pillow, your neck will be like this (forward), if you use a smaller pillow your neck will remain like this (behind), so choose a pillow that can support your neck. When you are sleeping on your back, try to sleep without a pillow for some time.

These are a few simple things that you can do apart from the medication, which will take care of your neck pain.

What would I do if I were in your place?
I would for sure not start painkillers, neck collars, or go for surgery. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of cervical spondylosis.

Do not go for surgery or start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months’ time. But if these medicines can help you get rid of your pain and avoid surgery for the rest of your life, isn’t it worth giving it a try?

Take care.
