Insomnia or sleeplessness
I am sure all of us went through sleepless nights some or the other time and we know how it is to wake up the next morning, you feel groggy, irritable, cranky, shouting at people. You are like I am tired, I do not want to do this, I am not capable of doing that today because I did not sleep well, yeah sleep can do that to a lot of people.

How common is Insomnia?
Around, 30% of adults suffer from Insomnia.

What is Insomnia?
People would have told you or you would have read in the books that you need about eight to ten hours of sleep. Who told you this? Some 200 years back, the doctors decided to figure out how many hours a person needs to sleep to remain healthy. They conducted a series of tests and decided minimum 8 hours of sleep is essential to remain healthy.

We still follow the eight hours of sleep requirement today. Let me ask you, 200 years back that is our grandparents and great grandparents. Do you have an idea of their lifestyle? They were 95% more active than us, they used to work in the field, the forest, they used to walk or cycle to work. They ate organic food, got wet in the rain, soaked in the sunlight, moonlight. Their bodies require eight hours of sleep to rest considering they were 95% more active than us.

Do you work as much as them? Are you physically as active as them? Why does your body need so much sleep and rest, when you do not use your body like that? Look at people like Modi, Abdul Kalam, Bill Gates, Sadhguru, all these people sleep for 3 to 4 hours at night and they are all brilliant people, leaders of the world. What is it that makes them different from you? It is a state of mind, your mind is preconditioned that you must sleep for 8 to 10 hours, and the day you do not get your sleep, your body is not the one that is complaining, it is your mind. You wake up in the morning and nothing happens to you, no body pains, nothing. Your mind is complaining, I did not sleep well, I am not feeling too good. Your body does not require so much sleep but you are predetermined, your body is preconditioned to sleep for so long.

Of course, if you are a farmer, an athlete, or somebody who is doing a lot of physical work throughout the day, then you definitely require so much sleep, but most people who do mental work instead of physical work do not need so much sleep. What they basically need is thoughtlessness, that means your mind is active throughout the day and you need to give rest to your mind.

How do you give your mind rest? Whenever you feel a little tired or low on energy, sit down in one place, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. See how the breath is going in and out, concentrate, you will have a lot of thoughts going in and out of your mind, ignore them and slowly you will drift into a level of thoughtlessness, that means you will not have any thoughts, you might even doze off for about 15 Minutes. Doesn’t this happen to you many times, you doze off for about 10 to 15 minutes and you feel refreshed as if you had a good night’s sleep, isn’t it? That is all you need. Shut your brains for about 10 to 15 mins.

When you are using your phone and it slows down, what do you do? You close windows 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and the phone is back to normal. What are you doing here? You are shutting off your thoughts, that is exactly what you need to do yourself and you will be good to go.

Allopathic approach:
They put you on sleeping tablets, antidepressants, you pop it and you fall asleep but you wake up in the morning feeling groggy which lasts half a day, sometimes it goes on. While you are on these tablets you can sleep better but when you try to stop them, you cannot fall asleep, you are hooked to the tablets and they have side effects when taken for a long time.

Homeopathic approach:
Having said that you do not require sleep, some people still cannot manage if they do not sleep. They feel good as long as they hear me talk, they are fine for the next two days, three days, or one week and then they say I want some sleep.

For such people we do have a solution, there are good medicines in homeopathy that are very safe. The reason you cannot sleep at night is because your mind is active, it is going on and on and on all the time. Homeopathic medicines stop your mind from being overactive, they do not zonk you up or push you to sleep. Our medicines help to calm your mind, so you are able to relax at night and fall asleep.

People who are already on allopathic medications:
(We ask them to stop their allopathic medication and take Homeopathy. In some cases where people have been on allopathic medications for a long time, we start homeopathic medicines along with allopathy, and gradually taper off their allopathic medicines, and over some time we stop their allopathic medications.)

Do’s and Don’ts:
Do not give too much importance to sleep.

As you age, your need for sleep comes down. Older and senior citizens do not worry about not getting sleep, use your time in a constructive way, listen to music, read a book, go out, watch something, do something useful rather than sleeping. The more you sleep the faster you die.

What would I do if I was in your place?
I would for sure not start on any allopathic medications. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of insomnia.

Do not start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months’ time. But if these medicines can help you avoid allopathic medicines and get rid of your insomnia for the rest of your life, isn’t it worth giving it a try?

Take care.
