Lichen Planus

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Lichen planus is a chronic mucocutaneous disease that affects the skin and the oral mucosa. It presents itself in the form of papules, lesions or rashes that is due to inflammation. The rash is characterised by small flat-topped bumps with rough, scaly patches on the skin or in the lining of mucous membranes(of mouth or vagina)

Traditionally in allopathic treatment there is no treatment for lichen planus. except steroid application externally or oral steroids which control the problem. Homeopathy has been very successful not only in containing the disease but also in curinge it completely very safely. The treatment could be long drawn but it is worth it as it is the safest form of treatment available as of now.

Lichen planus:
We get a lot of people who have just been diagnosed with lichen planus or who are on allopathic medicines for lichen planus, coming to us asking if we can help them.

How common is lichen planus?
In World, around 2.6% of the population suffers from lichen planus. Oral lichen planus is more common in women than in men.

What is lichen planus?
Lichen planus is an infection that affects the skin and mouth. On the skin, you get purplish-colored eruptions which usually come on hands, legs, around the ankle and wrist region. Once they come up, they continue to grow and spread. These eruptions cause a lot of itching.

In the mouth, it causes sores, (lacy white patches), you can even see the purplish hue in the mouth. Your mouth becomes sore, sensitive and it can keep spreading. Everything you eat or drink feels spicy.

Causes of Lichen planus?
The cause of lichen planus is not known, but it is supposed to be an autoimmune disorder, autoimmune disorder is where your own defence mechanism mistakenly attacks cells of the skin and mucus membranes.

Lichen planus can sometimes run in the family.

Allopathic approach:
In allopathy, for skin lesions, they give you steroid creams and as long as you use these steroid creams, the eruptions go away but the moment you stop it, you are back to square one. For mouth lesions, they put you on some applications, and you feel better as long as you use them.

If these external applications do not help, they put you on immuno-suppressants and steroids which helps you as long as you take them. Once you stop them, within few months the lesions start coming back.

Allopathy gives you temporary relief but it cannot cure lichen planus.

Homeopathic approach:
We have been able to help numerous patients with lichen planus. You need to understand that there is a process that is happening inside the body which is causing lesions in different parts of the body. This is not something that can be treated from the outside, it has to be treated from the inside.

Homeopathic medicines rectify the particular process that is causing lichen planus and prevent the new lesions from forming. It is a time-consuming process, it does not happen in a few weeks or months but we have been able to help a lot of people get out of lichen planus.

The itching and all comes down within few weeks and over a period of time, the new lesions stop forming and the old ones completely go away. I normally recommend virgin coconut oil application to soothe the skin. It does not do anything to the process inside but it soothes the skin and makes you feel better when you use the oil.

People who are already on allopathic medications:
We make them stop their allopathic medication and ask them to take Homeopathy for three months. In some cases where the lichen planus is chronic, and they have been on steroids for a long time, we start homeopathic medicines along with allopathy, and over some time, we taper off their allopathic medicines. Most people respond in about two to three months, some people take a longer time to respond.

What happens if you leave it alone?
If left alone, it keeps spreading to the entire body and it does not look very good. You keep itching and scratching the body. In the mouth, it becomes so sensitive and sore that you find it difficult to eat food because everything you eat feels spicy.

Diet restrictions:
There is no particular diet restriction. For diet I always say, you are the best person to decide what is good and bad for you? If you feel that I had non-veg today and I am itching a lot, then avoid non-veg for some time.

If you had brinjal or some fruit and it increases the itching, avoid them. Listen to your body, your body will tell you what suits you and what does not. You just have to listen to your body.

Drink a lot of water and liquids.

Do’s and Don’ts:
Stress is known to aggravate the problem. Stress does not cause lichen planus but people who are undergoing stress will suddenly find a lot of new lesions coming up.

Most of the autoimmune disorders are aggravated by stress. We all have some kind of stress, but take care of it by doing meditation, breathing exercises, and yoga. We also give you medicines that help in controlling the stress and not letting the stress affect your body.

What would I do if I were in your place?
I would for sure not start on steroids or immuno-suppressants, I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of lichen planus. It takes a little time, but homeopathy is a sure-shot way of tackling lichen planus.

Do not start on any allopathic medicines until you have given homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months’ time. But if these medicines can help you avoid immuno-suppressants and steroids and get rid of lichen planus permanently for the rest of your life, isn’t it worth giving it a try?

Take care.
