Psoriasis

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes redness and irritation of the skin. Most people with psoriasis have thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches called scales.

The number of people affected by psoriasis is surprising. Over the years, we have been able to help numerous patients suffering with psoriasis. The treatment is a bit prolonged, but it is effective and is much safer than any other option available. We have also been able to prevent and treat the complications like psoriatic arthritis which arise from psoriasis. It is advisable not to opt for the strong allopathic treatment unless homeopathy has been tried.

Psoriasis:
Psoriasis is one of my most favorite diseases to treat because I can understand the suffering of psoriasis and I have been able to help a lot of people get out of psoriasis.

Usually, the moment the doctor diagnoses you with psoriasis, you go back home, you google psoriasis and you see all the gory photographs with so much detailing, the extent to which psoriasis can spread, the damage it can do, and feel depressed and frightened.

How common is psoriasis?
Globally, around 100 million people are affected by psoriasis.

What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is nothing but flakes which means the cells does not know when to stop multiplying and form build-up of scaly patches. It can start on the face, scalp, nails, hands, legs, chest or anywhere else on the body.

A lot of people have scalp psoriasis. They think it is dandruff and go on treating it for years together but it does not go away. Finally, one doctor tells them that it is scalp psoriasis. In some people, only nails are affected, the tip of the nail becomes yellow (picture). You can have cracks on your palms, fingers, hands, feet and the cracks just do not go away. Some people might have itching. Psoriasis can present itself in different ways but the silvery scales are very common in psoriasis.

In my 30 years of experience with treating psoriasis, I have derived a few conclusions regarding psoriasis. Most of my psoriasis patients are either January or October born, you will ask me why? Well, if you follow the sun sign, it says that most of these people are restless, fastidious, and meticulous. They want things done in a particular way and they cannot stand any change in their routine, it affects them a lot if their schedule gets disturbed.

Psoriasis is not caused by stress, but stress aggravates psoriasis. Whenever you go through emotional disturbances, you will find a new patch coming up. Psoriasis usually runs in the family.

Allopathic approach:
If it is a very mild case of psoriasis, it goes away with steroid applications but once you stop applying the ointments, it reoccurs. Then they put you on methotrexate which is an immunosuppressant or the latest is biologicals. As long as you are on methotrexate or biological, your psoriasis is in control but once you stop them, you are back to square one. They do no cure psoriasis and these medicines cause a lot of damage inside the body.

When the doctor puts you on these medicines, he will make you go for a blood test every few months. These blood tests are done just to see if these medicines are affecting your lungs, liver, kidneys, or any other organ in the body. These tests are not done because of psoriasis but to check the side effects of medicines, you can imagine how dangerous these drugs are. The biological injections get rid of psoriasis but they are even known to cause cancer. The side effects of these medicines are more harmful than psoriasis itself.

Homeopathic approach:
We have been able to help a lot of people with psoriasis, we have had miraculous recoveries in some people, but we also have people who take a long time to respond. You need to accept psoriasis as a part of your life for a while, till I can help you, until then try to accept it.

Once you start on homeopathic medications, over a period of time your skin starts getting better and the patches stop coming. Homeopathic medications stop any further progress of psoriasis. That is my first line of treatment, for six months we stop any further progress of the disease and as we are doing it, the existing patches will slowly start coming down.

We get a lot of people suffering from psoriatic arthritis too, and most of them respond very beautifully. We have been able to help a lot of people who come to us in the initial stages so much better than people who come to us in later stages.

People who are already on allopathic medicines:
We get a lot of people who are already on ointments or methotrexate, we start them on homeopathic medicines along with allopathic medicines and over a period of time gradually taper off all the allopathic medicines. We do not ask them to stop allopathy suddenly because it causes a flare-up so over some time we gradually taper off their allopathic medications and stop them.

What happens if you don’t treat psoriasis?
If left alone, psoriasis can spread to the rest of the body. It can affect your joints causing psoriatic arthritis, your joints become swollen and painful. It is a little difficult to live with psoriasis.

More than the problem, it is the social stigma associated with psoriasis that is the major issue. You cannot shake hands with people if you have cracks, you feel socially awkward and uncomfortable when your patches are visible socially.

Diet restrictions:
I am not the one to tell you what you need to eat, you need to figure it out by yourself. If you think that after eating a particular thing today, your psoriasis has flared up, then avoid that. Make a note of things that aggravates your psoriasis. Some people say non-vegetarian can aggravate, but it does not mean you stop non-vegetarian. You eat it and if you feel that your non-veg is not aggravating your psoriasis. Why do you want to stop it? Drink a lot of water.

Do’s and Don’ts:
My favorite external application is virgin coconut oil. I recommend applying virgin coconut oil once in the morning and evening. I also tell patients whose patches are bad, visible on the hands and face to go ahead, use the steroid in the beginning. I do not want you to feel bad and awkward socially because of the patches. Apply steroids only on the socially visible patches. Do not apply anything else other than virgin coconut oil on the rest of your body. Trust me over a period of time your usage of ointments will come down.

I always tell my patients that they need to chill. Start doing some yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, exercise regularly, maintain a disciplined lifestyle, keep your weight in control and sleep well. Do not let every Tom, Dick, and Harry affect you. Do not give people the liberty to affect your emotions, be in control of your emotions because every time your emotions are disturbed, your psoriasis is going to flare up.

What would I do if I were in your place?
I would for sure not start steroid ointments or any allopathic medications. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and manage psoriasis.

Do not start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months’ time. But if these medicines can help you manage your get rid of psoriasis for the rest of your life, isn’t it worth giving it a try?

Take care.
